ANIMAL WARNING SIGN

Dear Guides!

You never know what happened to an animal prior to encountering them, so that’s why you should always be careful with all animals and treat them with respect. While animals are naturally cautious of humans, there are a number of situations or conditions which cause the animal to be compromised.

1.Animals that have been captive-reared.

such an animal has lost its natural fear of humans through positive reinforcement, such as feeding. This means that the animals behavior is less predictable than if it were raised in the wild.

2. Injured animals.

An injured animal will often behave in a desperate way, also making its behavior less predictable and more dangerous.

3. Animals with young.

Parents are naturally protective over their young and will attack if they feel their young are in danger.

Never experiment with dangerous animals or test them- If you want to develop your approach skills and experience, do so with the assistance of an experienced colleague who will offer you advice and assist you if things go wrong.

Don’t get too close, constantly keep an eye on the animal for signs of awareness of your presence, and keep a comfortable distance for the safety of the animal and the guests.

Never lose respect or become blasΓ© when viewing animals, no matter the format it is taking place in. Having rational fear keeps you alert and intensifies your senses making you think and act faster, and keeping you and your Guests safe!

CONTROLLING A DANGEROUS SITUATION.

.....In any serious confrontation with dangerous game you need to keep your head and think clearly about your actions. Always try to dissolve the situation with as little drama as possible.

Remember that there is no such thing as a Mock Charge- its a very real warning that should be taken seriously, as a precursor to a real charge! Therefore, such a charge is called a Warning Charge.

Attempt to back off, ensure that you are not on a Flight path, especially in the case of rhino or hippo. Offer an escape route with an understanding of flight directions that the particular species is most likely to take.

Stay calm and keep your tone of voice calm and controlled. Explain your actions to Guests, as well as what is happening with the animal.

By following these guidelines, and keeping your head, you will be able to handle and get out of a dangerous situation.
